Notes
Lotus is an album released in 2003 and is part of a much larger project that consisted of a documentary of images and a tour in theatres. So it is not just a title but can be seen as a world, declined in several projects linked to each other by a common denominator: essentiality.
«According to Hindu tradition, the Lotus is the mouth of the womb of the universe» – Elisa says - «It is the sacred flower of the manifestation and illumination. It seemed to me a wonderful meaning».
The idea of 'Lotus' came from a collection of photographs of nature and landscapes taken by Elisa who meant to write a soundtrack to frame those images and to create an album that consists of a collection of songs linked together with one feeling.
The album was released on CD, cassette, and a vinyl limited edition. A package containing the CD in a Super Audio format was accompanied by a documentary about the 'Making of Lotus' and shot by Luca Guadagnino.
Elisa is the author of all the songs (except for the cover of Leonard Cohen’s 'Hallelujah', a tribute to Jeff Buckley, Velvet Underground’s 'Femme Fatale' and Bruno Lauzi’s 'Almeno Tu Nell’Universo'). For the first time, Elisa in person produces the entire album, with the supervision of Pasquale Minieri.
In this work, Elisa wanted to draw attention to the soul of acoustic songs with new arrangements, in some cases even rewriting the melody. The album includes six new songs.
All tracks are recorded in analogic and are performed by Elisa and musicians in the acoustic version as if it was a live performance.
The arrangements are managed by Elisa with her band: Andrea Rigonat (acoustic guitar, classical and 12 strings), Max Gelsi (acoustic bass), Christian Rigano (piano, Fender Rhodes piano and Hammond organ), and Andrea Fontana (drums and percussion). The score of harmonies of the voices and of the chorus were written and performed by Elisa. The album was recorded in the studios of Milan and Calvi dell’Umbria, between April and October 2003.
Now out of print is the beautiful DVD 'Live @ MTV Supersonic + The making of Lotus' where Elisa, from MTV studios, in an intimate, dreaming and familiar atmosphere, offers a showcase to remember. |
